How should an organization treat and retain an employee?

Most organizations wishes to retain employees withing organizations for long-term. Employee who have stayed within an organization for a long-term are likely to be more skilled and experienced. An organization tends to benefit more from employees who are skilled and experienced through innovations and creativeness this enables an organization to gain competitive advantage. However for an employee to stay longer in an organization, he/she should be treated well. 

The followings are some of the ways in which an organization can treat an employee in order for him/her to stay/remain in the same organization;


Well paid - Employee who is well paid by an organization tends to stay with the same organization for a longer term. High pay rates fulfills the needs of the employees.


Mentoring well - For an employee to perform well and grow, he/she needs close mentoring and supervision. An employee who is well mentored and supervised is likely to stay longer in an organization.


Challenging - An employee who is determined and wishes to learn more likes challenges for him/her to grow. Becoming a competent employee requires exposure to various changes and problem solving situations.


Promotion - An employee need to be promoted from one step/stage to another after achieving some targets on performance appraisal. Promoting from from subordinate staff to a line manager or from accountant to senior accountant is motivational and makes employee to stay within the organization in a more time.


Involving -Employees need to be involved in organizational decisions to increase the sense of ownership of duties and responsibilities. Employee who is involved in various decisions of an organization feels more valuable and can stay longer in the organization.


Appreciation - Employees need to be appreciated for their efforts and contributions made in the organization. In some organizations, appreciation can be in form of formal appreciation letter. Once appreciated, employee feels more valuable in the organization.


Value - Employee who are valued by an organization are likely to be motivated and are likely to stay longer in the organization. All affairs of employees need to be taken with care and attention to value an employee.


Empowerment - Employee who are being empowered are satisfied and feel considered by the organization management. Employees who are empowered are more likely to stay longer with organization.


Trusted - Employee need to be trusted by the management of an organization. Once trusted, employees feel the power and authority in executing their functions/duties.


On a mission - Employees who are on a mission are likely to stay with an organization for longer time. Completion of a mission is what determine the length of time an employee is likely to stay with an organization.
